< Back Crail Golf Club Crail Golfing Society, Crail, Anstruther KY10 3XN, UK Outdoor events Box Office 0333 666 3366 hello@crailfestial.org Description Crail Golfing Society It comes as no surprise that Crail is home to a historic golf club, after all, this is a place where history lives in every stone. Early records refer to it as Cherel , and by 1153 as Karel , names rooted in Pictish words for ‘fort’ and ‘rocks’. An 8th-century stone cross-slab preserved in the parish church hints at even deeper origins. Crail became a Royal Burgh in 1178 under King William the Lion. Later, Robert the Bruce granted permission for Sunday markets in the Marketgate, which thrived for centuries among Europe’s largest. Built around its charming (and still working) fishing harbour, much of Crail’s distinctive 17th- to 19th-century architecture reflects Dutch influences, a legacy of thriving trade with the Netherlands. Today, Crail Golfing Society sits on the eastern edge of the Kingdom of Fife, just 12 miles from St Andrews, the Home of Golf. Founded in 1786, the club traces its roots to the very dawn of the game. While no two rounds at Crail are ever the same, one thing remains constant: the warm welcome of genuine Scottish hospitality. Dating back to the 12th century, this historic site played a key role in Scotland’s royal past, hosting kings and noble families. A Royal Legacy Crail became a Royal Burgh in the 1100s, and its castle was a favoured retreat for King David I of Scotland . Records even show repairs being made in 1264 , proving its importance. The castle later passed to Ada de Warenne as part of her marriage to Prince Henry of Scotland, adding to its noble heritage. In 1310 , King Robert the Bruce granted the castle’s constabulary to Lawrence de Weirmerstoun, reinforcing Crail’s status as a key Scottish stronghold. The castle also housed a chapel dedicated to St. Rufus , an Irish saint, adding a spiritual significance to its storied past. The Castle Today By the 16th century, the castle had fallen into disrepair, described as "ruinous" by Mary, Queen of Scots in 1563 . Though she granted permission for its restoration, it’s unclear whether the work was ever completed. Today, visitors can still glimpse remnants of this once-mighty fortress, including a 17-foot-long section of ancient masonry in the serene Castle Garden .
