< Back Crail Community Hall Crail Community Hall, St Andrews Rd, Crail, Anstruther, UK Indoor events Box Office 0333 666 3366 hello@crailfestival.org Description Crail Community Hall Whether you're a resident or a festival visitor, the Crail Community Hall promises to be a welcoming space to enjoy the best of the Crail Festival's live entertainment program. The Hall was built as the United Free Church, designed by JD Cairns in 1908. It stands on the site of a previous, smaller United Free Church, following a union with Crail West Church (now Holy Trinity Catholic Church). This is a classic Free Presbyterian Church building from the Edwardian period. Like many churches of its time, it takes inspiration from Scottish architectural traditions while also reflecting the broader British preference for late Gothic, often referred to as Perpendicular style. The church followed a typical Presbyterian layout, with a focus on preaching. This resulted in a wide yet relatively short central nave, complemented by shallow transepts on either side to provide extra space around the pulpit. A short chancel, now used as a stage, originally served as the sanctuary, housing the communion table and elders’ chairs. To the east, an integrated church hall blends seamlessly with the rest of the building. Inside, the former church space is particularly striking, thanks to its expressive roof design. The curved undersides of the main trusses define the bays, while paired arches connect to the transepts, creating a harmonious structure. At the western end, the original gallery remains in place. Listed as Category B, the building’s most distinctive external feature is its octagonal tower, a minor landmark in northern Crail along the A917 St Andrews Road. 2026 Anniversary Highlights – On Sale Now As part of our milestone 40th year, we are proud to present a stellar line-up of Scottish talent. - Crail Town Hall | Crail Festival
< Back Crail Town Hall Crail Town Hall, Marketgate, Crail, Anstruther, UK Indoor events Box Office 0333 666 3366 hello@crailfestival.org Description Discover the Charm of Crail Tolbooth and Town Hall Nestled in the heart of Crail, Fife, the Crail Tolbooth and Town Hall is a striking Category A-listed building that tells the story of this picturesque coastal town. Standing proudly at the junction of Marketgate and Tolbooth Wynd, this historic gem is a must-see for visitors exploring Scotland’s rich heritage. A Building Steeped in History The Tolbooth and Town Hall were built in two distinct parts. The Tolbooth , dating back to the 16th century, showcases classic Scottish medieval architecture with its rugged rubble masonry. In 1776, it was enhanced with a charming pagoda-style bell tower, complete with a 16th-century bell cast in Rotterdam. Look closely, and you’ll spot the quirky weather vane, a Crail Capon (haddock) , a playful nod to the town’s fishing traditions. The Town Hall section, initially built in 1602, was redesigned in 1814 by architect John Corstorphine. Its elegant façade features sash windows and a grand council chamber that once hosted the Royal Borough of Crail’s meetings. Later, in 1886, local architect John Currie added refinements, including the striking central doorway. A Living Piece of Crail’s Community For much of the 20th century, this was the hub of local governance. Even after local government reorganisation in 1975, the Town Hall remained a focal point, becoming the meeting place for the Royal Burgh of Crail and District Community Council . In May 2019, the building took centre stage once more when the Lord Lyon King of Arms processed past it to proclaim the granting of a coat of arms to the community—a proud moment in Crail’s history. Visit Today Though the public library (once housed here) closed in 2016, the Tolbooth and Town Hall remain a cherished landmark. Whether you’re drawn to its historic architecture , curious about its unique haddock weather vane , or simply soaking up Crail’s coastal charm, this building is a fascinating stop on your Scottish adventure. Plan your visit to Crail Tolbooth and Town Hall, where history and community come alive. what3words https://w3w.co/moon.bordering.manages Access and Accessibility There is level access into the hall, then stairs or a lift to the first floor, and then level within the gallery. Toilets There are separate toilets for men and women Parking Visitors can park in the car park adjacent to the Town Hall, being mindful of residents.
