Tenement Jazz Band
Making their first appearance at Crail Festival, we are delighted to welcome, from Edinburgh, the Tenement Jazz Band. A traditional jazz band, they share a love of jazz music and will continue their journey of exploration of the roots of jazz at Crail Festival. They aim to capture the raw energy and excitement of the earliest jazz recordings, finding and reviving lesser-heard songs and cultivating their own interpretation of these. They are particularly inspired by the modern-day resurgence of early jazz on the streets of New Orleans which is fuelled by the strong busking culture there. In their brief existence they have performed at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee, Islay and Glasgow Jazz Festivals, as well as Belladrum, Eden and Kelburn festivals in Scotland, and the Fjellrocken Festival in Norway. They have played to sell-out shows in Edinburgh at both the Fringe and Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, including as a backing band to New Orleans' singer Meschiya Lake. Such has been their success they were nominated for Best Band at the Scottish Awards in 2019. We are extremely fortunate to have the Tenement Jazz who are extremely busy - as they are quickly off to a jazz festival in Northern France Talented after the Crail Festival performance. Passionate and talented musicians, this promises to be a superb evening of jazz music.
"brings a freshness and energy of youth to New Orleans style traditional jazz whilst also staying true to the original style" - Ron Simpson, The Jazz Rag, May 2019 "the passion with which these young musicians approach the music is unmistakable...a most welcome addition to the ranks of young traditional jazz bands...the future of traditional jazz is in good hands." - Bert Thompson, Just Jazz Magazine, April 2019 (Review of New Orleans Wiggle EP)
"If you think that the music of yesteryear and the year before that is only played by doddery old men with wavering vibratos then think again...this is a relatively young band who've certainly picked up the essence of the old masters of jazz." - Bebop Spoken Here (Prohibition Cabaret Bar, Newcastle, March 2019)
"very talented and evidently passionate musicians...a wonderful evening of happy, upbeat music" - Karolina Zieba, The Student (Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2018)
